Orion V8.1 upgrade woe

Well I took the plunge & upgraded from V7.8 to 8.1 last night - only took 4 hours :-p

It seemed to go well, but this morning users are getting the dreaded "Service Unavailable" on the web page.
I did a search for DefaultAppPool & found this post, but it is "no longer available".

I opened a ticket with support almost 3 hours ago, but have not heard back from anyone yet.
I'm currently downloading Win2k SP1 in an attempt to stabilize the W3C service which keeps crashing.

Orion 8.1 does not support Windows 2000. We actively block it most of the time, but there are some cases where an upgrade from 7.8 to 8.1 incorrectly allows install to proceed on Windows 2000.

Upgrade your OS to Windows Server 2003, run repair, re-run the config wizard. The problem should be fixed.

Sorry, my bad, I am running Win2k3 & will be installing SP1 tonight & rerun the Orion config wizard.

Support suggested re-installing IIS, but that had no affect on this problem.

Just for reference sake, in case others run into this problem,
this is the warning message in the Windows eventlog:

A process serving application pool 'DefaultAppPool' terminated unexpectedly. The process id was '4240'. The process exit code was '0xc0000005'.

And here is the error message when the W3SVC service is unavailable:

Application pool 'DefaultAppPool' is being automatically disabled due to a series of failures in the process(es) serving that application pool.

I'll update here with the final outcome for the fix on this.

All is now well with the Orion 8.1 upgrade.
Here are the details for anyone else doing this:

Start:

Server OS - Win2k3, no .Net2.0, no Service Packs installed, running Orion V7.8.2

Steps taken:

Install Windows .Net2.0 framework as per upgrade guide here.
Compact DB tables & indexes manually with DB Manager
Zip all ...\InetPub\Solarwinds files
Zip all ...\Proigram files\Solarwinds\Orion NetPerfmon V7\ files
Backup DB once compacting is complete
Run V8.1 install - wait 3 hours for DB to be updated (had to stop & increase the DB logfile space - hit 7Gb).
Install completed, no reboot required
Restore any customized files

Results:

Server was fine until web server got busy & warning & error messages appeared in the Windows Event log (EventID 1002 & 1009 & 1011)

Fix:

Downloaded Win2k3 SP1
Shutdown all processes running on server (Use Shutdown NetPerfMon utility)
Install SP1 - reboot server
IIS will not be started yet - go to Windows update site & install SP1 updates & patches (includes Security updates for .Net2.0 framework)
Reboot server & re-run the Orion config wizard

Results:

Server is now running error free & Orion web site has improved performance over previous V7.8.
