IP Address Managment as a service?

Has anyone tried to run IP Address Management as a service?
I want to run it as a service in the background so that it runs all the time and updates the database regularly.

Has anyone tried this?
Will the executable work correctly?
If so what were your issues if any?

I am open to discussion.

I run the NOC for a very large School district with 80 schools, and about 19000 nodes. We are using IP Address Management to track and document our IP Addresses. We do not want to leave a server logged on all the time just for one application.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated

Firedaemon may well do what you need. I have not tried this with any of the toolsets, but have used this for other applications I needed to run as a service and it worked extremely well.

You're kidding, right? I have to leave a server logged in to run IP scans using the IP Address Management tool?

I think the second issue is that you'll have to kick off the scan again. We have the Professional 2002 version, and there aren't any command line options. It scans all subnets and stops when it's complete. There doesn't seem to be an option to have it cycle through the subnet list continually.

So, it looks like you'd have to kill the program and restart it to kick off another scan. In our case, a full scan of every subnet takes about 8 hours, so we could restart it once a day and be OK.

I have no exposure to firedaemon, so I'm not sure if it could do that or not.

This is not the case.

There is a setting in IP Address Management tool which determines the scan frequency for each subnet you have defined. I have mine set to scan anywhere from every 4 hours to 2 days, depending on what types of devices are in the subnet.

As for running this as a service, this topic has been discussed & requested many times in this forum.
