User Tracking Documentation

Hi Team,

I have upgraded to NPM 10 and NCM 6 and would like to start playing with the User Tracking feature.
When I do a search in 'Find connected port' I get the message:

Before you can view port mappings for this device, you must first use Network Discovery to properly add the device to the Orion database.

I have done a rediscover on all my cisco devices with no luck, as well as running an inventory connection in NCM.
Is there a document that explains what needs to be switched on to use this feature?

I can't go into full detail on thwack about our future plans around user tracking at this time. However, we know this is still a large pain point for many of our customers and are working on a solution. I will contact you directly offline to discuss in more detail.

If anyone else would like to have more information about our plans. Please send me a private message. I will also be reaching out to everyone who has posted on this thread to solicit input and provide details.

I too am looking to use the new User Tracking feature so I can finally retire our Ciscoworks installation, this is the ONLY feature I have kept that waround for... Any ifno on User Tracking setup via Solarwinds that will give me the same data I had in Ciscoworks??

I also tried a little bit with user tracking..

I had no luck with the website. The Layer2 Informations are also not visible inside NCM with the "find Address" feature. With 5.5.2 The Layer 2 Informations were present in the NCM.

Aaron - just so I am clear - did you run the discovery in NCM or NPM? You need to run it in NPM. If that's what you have done, please open a support ticket so that we can fix this for you.

I am also having an issue with the user tracking and the discovered links features not working. I have completed several network discoveries in NPM but the info has not populated. I have ticket 164899 opened for this.

I swear I must be blind in both eyes........

I just can not find the "Find connected port" feature....

I have NPM 10 and NCM 6 with integration. Where exactly do I find this feature in the NCM web console?

Hi Ivarth - on the NCM integration module (Configs tab), scroll about half-way down and the default location for the resource is directly under "What's New" in the right-hand column. Is that what you're looking for?

Ahh, I think I found what was wrong...

Yesterday I installed NPM 10 and then NCM 6 and the integrator...

The NPM 10 install didn't work so I had to do a repair of it....

Now I can see that NCM 6 is on the server itself, but I only see NCM 5.5.2 in the web console...

I'm going to try to run the ncm 6 integrator again..

So, Here is what I have gotten from support so far, I hope it helps someone....

1. Please do not run the Rediscovery on your existing Devices, but perform new Network Sonar Discovery:
    - Go to Settings > Network Sonar Discovery
    - Define the portion of your network on which the devices you want to discover are located
    - Execute the discovery

2. Go to Home > Reports > Topology Reports > Discovered Links and verify that report is present there

3. In case the report contains data, go to Configs > Config Summary > "Find Connected Port for End Host" Resource and do the following:
    - Click "Edit" button and check "Search for fuzzy match" check-box (this will enhance the search criteria to be matched)
    - Select "Search by" = 'IP Address' and type the IP Address from the report >> Click "Find"

"Find Connected Port for End Host" search results page consists of two sections:

- the top one represents search results based on Discovered Links report
- The bottom one represents search results based on Wireless Host mapping Report

For Wireless Host mapping Report you must have Wireless Devices added to your database. If the devices are not shown in the report, please go to Admin > Manage Nodes, select the Wireless device/s from the list and Perform Poll Now action.

The issue I have is that when running a sonar discovery I get the message:
Node XXXX skipped. Already exists in Orion DB.

And running the report gives the message:
No activity to report.

Support is looking, but if someone has gotten past here I'd appreciate the assistance.

Aaron, I'm awaiting to hear what you have found out from SolarWinds support. I am in a very similair position in that I would love to use this feature but currently it isn't working. I get the same message about needing to do a "Network Discovery." I followed the last recommended steps that support had given you and that did seem to help at least with the "Discover Links" report which used to show nothing, but now shows like 5 devices of my 80 some nodes (most of which were discovered prior to the "Network Sonar Discovery" feature included in NPM v10).

But like you my devices don't import into the Orion DB b/c they are in already there. I would love some more concrete documentation on how to enable this feature or to get it to work properly.

I'm also wondering if to fully enable this feature you need Orion to monitor each and every one of the switch ports on the switch (which if that is the case is not useful to us as we'd have to increase our license count two fold to be able to have all our switch ports monitored). Right now we monitor the actual access layer switch (CPU/Memory) and their up-links back to the Distro switches. If I could get a concrete answer on this from some SolarWinds support staff that would be wonderful. If I need to monitor each switch port on the switch to get this new User Tracking I guess I'll just stick to the SW Switch Port Mapper, due to license constraints.

Brrenner: Did you open a support ticket? If you could, that would be helpful, as we need to find out if this problem is being caused by the same issue, or something different for both you and Aaron. I will keep monitoring this thread and making sure that support is aware of the priority here.

I'll go ahead an open a ticket with support now. I was just wondering if you had to monitor each of the switches individual ports to get the "User Tracking" feature. As if that is the case we wouldn't be able to use it do to license constraints and the issue of it not working correctly would be moot.

I am having the same issue. I have a ticket open but have not heard anything since Monday. If you like to take a look at my case. the # is 164899.

I have completed the network discovery, I have even deleted nodes and added them back via the network discovery, but I still have a blank "discovered links" report and no info listed when I attempt to use the "find end user"/

Are you still having this problem with existing nodes being skipped during the new Network Discovery session?

Have you tried rerunning the NCM6.0 Integration installer yet? If not, please try that and let me know if it helps.

If you are running NPM 10 and upgrade the integration module to NCM 6.0 - you should see it. I think the default location is on the right-hand side under the "what's new" box.

If you aren't seeing it, please try running the repair function on the NCM integration module - and that should solve the issue. Let me know if it doesn't and we'll get it fixed.

One more vote for a true Ciscoworks-like USER TRACKER. I have been waiting for months to have the function in Orion. A User-Tracker scan that runs a few time a day is needed now. Please give us some indication as to when we will see it. Fred

We are still working on this. We expect to have something to send VERY soon. I'll make sure you are on the email.

When you add a device, you will need to specify which ports you want to collect information on. However, this port license is not the same as an interface count in NPM.
