How to trigger alert based on batch file output

Hi,

I'm wondering if there is a way to create a monitor that would run a batch file and trigger an alert based on the output of said batch file.

There are loads of articles on THWACK and in the Solarwinds KB on how to run a batch file as part of an alert trigger action, but I can't find anything on triggering an alert based on batch file output.

I created a ticket with Solarwinds support requesting assistance with this and their response was "use the Orion SDK, which is supported by the THWACK community". I'm still relatively new to Solarwinds and I've no experience with the SDK.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I should have said, the script is run on a remote Windows server (monitored via Solarwinds Agent).

So the short answer is yes, but I want to understand more about the batch file.

With the agent installed on that node, you can use the Server & Application Monitor to run windows scripts. However, if the batch file needs to be run at very specific times or only during part of the day then this option might not be best. SAM window script monitors will run 24x7 starting at the lowest interval of every minute to whatever frequency you set (default is to run every 5 minutes).

Another option is to see if there is some file that the batch files output creates or some windows event/log that could be read.

chad.every echo'd my idea: have the batch file output a result file, and monitor the contents of that file with SAM. If you don't want to configure a log file monitor, you can also do a file-exists monitor and have your batch file create (or delete) "ran_successfully.txt" or something like that. Or check the age of the file.

Yes, it would be a "run every x minutes" kind of scenario. Basically we've got a cluster running a custom application (the clustering is done within the application), and the script is a command that outputs the name of the online/active server. What my users are interested in is alerting if certain processes go down or restart but only on the online/active server (I believe these certain processes only run on the active server, the passive server would not have these processes running, but we don't want to alert on stopped/down processes on the standby/passive server).

So off the top of my head, you'd have a template that you would apply to each member of the cluster, that had two components:

1) the service monitor (to give you up/down and stats like CPU, RAM, etc) for historical tracking

2) a script component that runs the command you want and returns the status of each member (primary or not)

You'd then set up an alert for the "Application" category, where the triggers would be:

CONDITION GROUP (AND)

1) service name is XYZ

2) service status is "down"

CONDITION GROUP (AND)

1) component name is <name of script component>

2) component result is "primary"
