How to change the state of a monitored component to DOWN from within a custom application (C# application) ?

I am trying to use the Orion SDK in order to communicate with the Server and Application program.

Is it possible by using the Orion SDK to change the state of a monitored component to DOWN from within a custom application (C# application) ?

If yes, what is the best place to start ?

If it is not, are there any alternatives of doing so ?

Any help will be appreciated.

Changing the status of a component through the API is not supported. Could you tell us a bit more about your scenario? We might be able to find a different way to achieve your goals.

Probably I was going in the wrong direction….

My problem is that we have a bunch of custom applications, mostly written in C#.

When an exception is thrown in one of those applications, we want to be able to see that in the Server And Applications module in Solarwind.

One thing that I already tried was writing from the C# application to the Windows Event Log, while monitoring the Windows Event Log in Solarwind.

That worked fine, but I am interested in researching some alternative ways, where I shouldn’t go through logs or files. It is going to be really nice if there is a way to directly listen for exceptions in custom applications from within Solarwind product.

That's interesting. Do these exceptions take down the application? Or does it just log them and recover? If it is logging them and recovering, I don't think it really makes sense to mark the application as down in SAM. On the other hand, if they do take down the application, then you should be able to use one of the normal SAM component types (Windows Service or process, maybe, depending on how your custom applications are hosted) to detect that.

I'll pass this thread on to the SAM product manager and see if he has any other input.

I think I already tried doing it with Windows Process. It can successfully detect when the application is NOT running any more, but usually the application will continue running after the error and I want to display warning in SAM and send an email.
