IP SLA vs NTA

Hi,

I am trying to quickly understand the fundamental differences between these two products. I've had IP SLA for a long time, never really deployed it. One of my colleagues is asking if I can do Netflow analysis and I guess I can with NTA.

I need some guidance relative to where I can learn about the capabilitues of each. And is there some way to run IP SLA w/o Write snmp permissions to the routers? My router team is somewhat adamant that I do not have write permission.

Hi,

the main difference between IPSLAManager and NTA is that IPSLA generates traffic/operations for measuring the desired quality aspect of your network (for instance VoIP jitter, latency or network latency) whereas NTA do a NetFlow analysis of real network data. IP SLA is a Cisco technology that basically allows you easily set up operations at Cisco routers for monitoring quality and performance of your network. So using IPSLAM you can monitor the quality of your network even if there is no actual "real" traffic (for instance during night where there are not HTTP requests, or VoIP calls). Does it help to you?

You also have the ability to have the router team build the operations and then give the operation number. From there you can add them to the IP SLAM product. This way you only need read SNMP.

Perfect. I know it's a lot more work this way, but at least I can do some evaluation. I believe in the past, I let IP SLA show me what it was going to do and then had one of the router folks put it in so I could "play". This was a long time ago, when IPSLA was just a VOIP product.
