Detailed email alerting for BGP and OSPF alerts for NPM.

Hello Folks,

So i have the bgp and ospf pollers added for all layer 3 devices running bgp/ospf, only issue is the alerting i get for anything bgp/ospf is very generic, basically all it shows is "neighbor x.x.x.x on node y went down" and basically thats it for both bgp and ospf. This is from the default built in neighbor down alert which i guess is not detailed enough.

So what variables do i need to choose in the subject field under trigger actions (which is where we usually set up the email alerting) so that it shows all the details like neighbor hostname and the interface that it failed on etc (this is what i see on catalyst center by default which we also use for our cisco devices).

I'm sure there must be specific variables that i can select for this right?

If it's in the database, you can add it! Can vary how complicated it is.

For routing neighbor variables, there are a few out of the box. If you click on "Insert variable" you get a windows like this. In the drop downs in the upper left corner, choose your entity type and if you want, group by variable category (that's what I always do anyway). Then find your category in the rather long list.

Below you can see the routing neighbours category and the values.

But you can also define your own variables, with SWQL code. So I made an example to show the Local NICs name, and find that from the "Local Protocol Interface IP" variable. Like this:

The working custom variable then looks like this when inserted:

The name of the remote node could be tricky as it's not certain we monitor that one.
