Solarwinds Agent service status monitoring on target server

Hi Support,

Can any one help how to monitor Solarwinds Agent service status on target server. Below are the considerations I have tried and observations:

1. By using WMI-our environment is not configured with WMI, only Agent configuration is in place.
2. To detect Soalrwinds agent service down and automate to restart it, we again need agent to execute this code. But here Agent is itself down. No luck
3. When Solarwinds Agent is down. We are getting agent status as Unknown which is usual for others issues as well. No luck.

Please let us know how to find this Solarwinds Agent down status any of the way either by swql query/sql query or any process in Solarwinds console. Alerting on it.

If the SolarWinds Agent goes down, its Agent Status will show as Unknown and the Connection Status will display Unable to connect to the agent. You can use these conditions to set up an alert in Orion.
Restarting the agent directly through SolarWinds isn’t possible because connectivity is lost when the agent is down. However, you can still restart the agent service if it stops by using one of these methods:

Option 1: Use Windows Service Recovery
Go to Services.msc → Find SolarWinds Agent → Properties → Recovery tab.
Set:

First failure → Restart the Service
Second failure → Restart the Service
Subsequent failures → Restart the Service

This is the simplest built-in method and works even if the agent crashes.

Option 2: Task Scheduler with PowerShell
Create a scheduled task that checks the service status and restarts it if stopped:
PowerShell Script:
$serviceName = "SolarWindsAgent"
$service = Get-Service -Name $serviceName
if ($service.Status -ne "Running") {
Restart-Service -Name $serviceName
}

Steps:

Open Task Scheduler → Create Task
Trigger: Every 5 or 10 minutes
Action: Run the above PowerShell script

Option 3: Group Policy or Automation Tools
If you manage multiple servers, you can deploy the same script via GPO, SCCM, or any RMM tool.
