Migration Deadline and Recommendations
Solarwinds announced that the AppOptics and Librato add-ons will be deprecated, and support will end on January 31, 2026.
To maintain your application's monitoring, migrate to the SolarWinds Papertrail add-on, which offers log aggregation and metric monitoring.
Plan the migration carefully. Run systems in parallel for a few weeks to verify data continuity or switch immediately, noting that historical data will be lost after migration. For detailed steps and support, consult Heroku’s documentation or contact SolarWinds support.
Why do I need to migrate from AppOptics or Librato?
SolarWinds formally deprecated the AppOptics and Librato Heroku add-ons by 31 January 2026, and support will end on January 31, 2026.. These services are no longer supported on the Heroku platform. To ensure continued observability, metrics coverage, and future compatibility, users must migrate to Papertrail, which now supports both log aggregation and metric monitoring.
What benefits does Papertrail provide compared to AppOptics or Librato?
Papertrail extends its powerful log management to include full-stack metrics visibility. It enables unified monitoring of logs and metrics across dynos, applications, and databases, all in one platform. Key enhancements include:
- Native log-based Heroku metrics and custom metrics
- Preconfigured dashboards for application, dyno, and Postgres performance
- Faster setup and visualization workflows
- Out-of-the-box alert templates and dashboards
What are my migration options?
You can choose between two migration paths:
- Option 1: Parallel Operation (with data continuity)
Run both AppOptics/Librato and Papertrail in parallel for 2–4 weeks to verify data flow and ensure a smooth transition. - Option 2: Immediate Cutover (without data continuity)
Remove AppOptics/Librato add-ons immediately and start using Papertrail for monitoring. Historical data will not be retained in this option.

What happens to my existing dashboards and alerts?
These will not transfer automatically. You’ll need to recreate key alerts and dashboards in Papertrail. The platform provides templates and default system dashboards to simplify migration and retain equivalent visibility with minimal reconfiguration.
Will I lose my historical data?
Yes. Once you remove the AppOptics or Librato add-on, access to their dashboards, metrics, and historical data will be permanently lost. If you want continuity, operate both systems in parallel temporarily and export any required data before removal.
How do I install or upgrade to Papertrail with metrics?
You can install the Papertrail add-on directly from the Heroku Elements Marketplace.
To collect metrics alongside logs, choose a “Log + Metric” plan or upgrade an existing Papertrail plan via the Heroku dashboard or CLI.
Will my applications or code need changes?
No. Papertrail automatically collects logs and metrics via Heroku’s native logging output. Once provisioned, data begins flowing without any code or configuration changes.
What types of metrics does Papertrail provide?
Papertrail collects key Heroku system metrics, including:
- HTTP router timing and response codes
- Per-dyno runtime metrics for load and memory
- Postgres performance and connection metrics
- Error breakdowns across HTTP, runtime, and logging layers
It also supports custom metrics via the Heroku log stream for advanced observability use cases.
Can I build custom dashboards and alerts in Papertrail?
Yes. Papertrail allows you to create personalized dashboards and alerts to monitor critical KPIs. You can visualize latency percentiles, throughput, error trends, and system health.

How do I choose the right Papertrail plan?
For basic log management, you can select a Log-Only plan. To monitor Heroku metrics and custom metrics, select a “Log+Metric” plan.
Estimate your metric stream usage by considering per-dyno runtime metrics and the number of custom metrics you plan to track. Detailed plan tiers and pricing are available in the Marketplace.
What support is available during migration?
If you encounter issues during migration, refer to the Papertrail documentation on Heroku Dev Center or reach out to Heroku or SolarWinds Support for technical assistance.
How do I do a POC or trial?
To start a proof of concept (POC) or trial of the add-on, please reach out to Heroku or SolarWinds support to request an invitation to the Beta Free Trial. This trial plan will allow you limited-time access to all features so you can evaluate the product in your environment with no commitment.
