Our SQL plans have been horribly cannibalised, and we won't pay for someone to create proper ones.
Getting in touch with the DBAs to fix stuff
I put poor performance but our team and devs are actually pretty good. There's always opportunity to make performance better though!!!
Our DBA is about as much use as a chocolate teapot. He keeps blocking Solarwinds from accessing the SQL databases after I used it to show him how very badly configured they were. Easier to hide the problems than fix them.
We don't actually have a database team - or even database person. That's our biggest issue with databases
From where I am standing (I am about 8 months into this sysadmin job): documentation, incident response are the top priorities - what DBs are we running, what do these DBs do, who is accessing them, what is the history of incidents or issues with them? (Or to put it another way: when something breaks, where do I go look if something like this happened before, and how it was resolved last time)? This isn't just about the databases... I presume...
Other - I don't know I'm not a DBA.
Basically all of the above.
Learning SQL Sentry! I have it up and running rather well, I am having authentication issues (annoying SMTP alerts) - it is an amazing tool, developing with our soon to be database administrator, or database administrator in training. Because I was quite familiar with DPA, I have made a smooth transition, but could use some one-on-one help! Finding time right now is a big issue, I am upgrading my infrastructure, so we are using SQL Sentry to catch the machine pushing wait times up in our environment. I have it on a big display, so I can tell in a glimpse if someone is doing inappropriate queries against our data. DPA got us to the ... its no longer the network, it is a user/computer causing the issues. SQL Sentry will also assist in the scheduling of reports, tasks, and jobs, the calendar is going to be golden for our operation in the very near future. Thanks, SolarWinds for adding such an amazing tool to the repertoire!
There is no "db team" within our organization. There are several who are good with COTS software products which have been purchased with vendor "support." N o one has a full grasp on the databases which are here in this sprawled-out landscape. Just getting a real handle on our landscape's contents.
It depends on the mutlitple factors. Sometimes teams support or database server resources, etc. After migrating to RDS, we had faced IOPS problems.
In this industry we are constantly given more responsibilities and pressed to reduce costs and I wonder where the diminishing returns happen in EVERY business where the staff is so "busy" that things are falling apart.
Lack in performance
