One of the most visited posts ever on Geek Speak talks about when to make the move to an Enterprise Operations Center/mutli-Orion core architecture. Now that companies are investing in IT infrastructure again, I think it deserves a second look!

Can anybody further define what the "breaking point" is for a single Orion instance. Currently I monitor around 30,000 elements across 4 polling engines. (Primary and 3 additional pollers.) After an upgrade to 10.4 we are experiencing major performance issues. I have been working with Solarwinds and they are now telling me that we have too many nodes for one instance, and that we should break it up. Previously i was told we could have even more polling engines. We did not have this problem with 10.3 or 10.2. We are considering moving to EOC and breaking up into smaller instances of 2-3k nodes a piece.
Hi bpeyton17,
I'm not sure where the line is these days or how sharply it can be defined for any deployment. I'll link this over to PM so they can coment on sizing.

Assuming you have been talking to support and they have recommended you to break it up, there might be something special going on, that made them say this, because with 3+1 pollers, you should be fine with 30,000 elements, under normal circumstances.
Do you have a support case # that we could look at?
More on how to estimate the load of your pollers (valid for version a 10.2 and after): here and here.

SWQL is built on the framework of SQL and as such supports most of the standard clauses as part of a query. A very simple example query is: SELECT Caption, IPAddress, Vendor, ResponseTime FROM Orion.Nodes Dissecting this query is relatively straightforward: show some fields (Caption, IP address, Vendor, and Response Time)…
Active SSL Tunnels-ASA.UnDPThis poller *should* display the number of Active SSL VPN (Anyconnect) Tunnels currently connected to your box. However, I tried it with my 5520 running 8.0.4 and for some reason I get a OID Not Supported. Here's my post in the forum: *EDIT* This is confirmed working with at least Interm release…
