What Is Latency?

I brought my daughter to an event last weekend. At one point during my presentation she looked up at a word on the screen and asked:

"What is latency?"

And she did it with a smug look on her face...the look like she was challenging me to explain something in a simple enough way for her to understand.

So, I answered her...

"Latency is a measure of how long something takes. For example, when we call you down for breakfast and it takes you ten minutes, that's a measure of your latency."

As the attendees started laughing the look on her face went from smug to slightly annoyed.

I think I won that round.

I feel it is very important for children to see their parents at work. Since I work from my home it feels as if they don't ever really understand what is "work" for me. To be honest, it is also hard to explain. "Yes, I know it looks like I'm on Twitter, and that's for fun, but this is actually my job."

Anyway, I do my best to bring both of my children to local events when I can. I want them to understand that when I go away for 2-3 days I'm not laying on a beach somewhere.
