Bandwidth Gauges vs Real-Time Interface Monitor

Hello,

I'm watching a particular interface on a Cisco 2821 router using both a Bandwidth Gauge, and the Real-Time Interface Monitor.

Both are giving me drastically different numbers for the Receive and Transmit Kbps, with the RTIM being significantly higher.

I am likely just confused what these numbers are actually showing me, but I assumed they would be the same.

Can someone explain to me what the difference is between the Bandwidth Gauge "Receive" in Kbps and the RTIM "Bytes Received" in Kbps?

The SNMP Real-Time graph is showing the raw value of if(In/Out)Octets (which would be in Bytes) while the RTIM is displaying in Bits Per Second.

What is the polling interval on your gauges and RTIM? How different are the values from each other? They should be similar but not identical. Both of them normalize to one second. Since traffic can be bursty large bursts can occur towards the end of one tool's polling cycle but at the beginning of the other tools polling cycle. They should trend towards each other.

What version of Toolset are you running?

I believe it's toolset 9.2

I had both the gauges and the RTIM polling at 5 seconds for the longest time, until I read that could be too much load, so I backed both down to 30 seconds.

So I can assume that both monitors should be giving me the same numbers?

Here is what I've noticed this morning:

In RTIM, on the Bytes Received number for the interface I want to watch, I right-click and choose "Graph Selected Statistic"

In the SNMP Real Time Graph that pops up, the "Current Value" is never anywhere close to what the "Bytes Received" number is in RTIM.

So what are each of these tools showing me? Clearly something drastically different...

The SNMP Real-Time Graph is plotting "ifOutOctets"... Octets... does that mean the graph is displaying BYTES and the RTIM is displaying BITS? If so, that would explain everything!
