meant to delete a user but accidentally deleted the whole group which was called "vendors" and had many users in it. I really need it recovered. How can I undelete and restore it? Serv-U FTP version 12.1.0.8
recovery q. thanks for the help
Are you sure all the users are gone? I'm not familiar with your version, but it seems that deleting a group would not propagate to the the users.
Did you check if there are still user files on disk?
Do you have backups?
yes the users under the group called "vendors" are gone. there are other groups and the users there are intact. But lets say i delete a single user. is there even a way to undo that?
From within serv-u? Not that I know of.
If the version of serv-u you are using stores users in individual files, you might be able to use a file undelete program. Note that the longer you wait to do this, the more likely the deleted files will have their blocks overwritten.
If your serv-u version puts everything in one file, the undelete program will not be useful. The blocks probably got overwrote immediately.
If the tool doesn't work, and you have no backups, you might try a professional data recovery firm. I'm not sure they can do an overwritten file. If they can, the bill will be incredibly high.
I think the OP is asking exactly that, where the user logins are stored for Serv-U. I found this thread looking for that answer also, as I'm trying to bring forward my configured users from another server.
I've learned so far that OLD version (v4.x) and maybe v6 stored the user accounts in a ServuDaemon.ini file. It looks like going forward, there is a Users folder under the program install folder, and also a .archive file (or files). Both of these appear to me to be associated directly with login accounts. I've observed a .backup file is created upon edits as well.
Probably too late for the OP's purposes back in August, but if you happen to have backups or these files in the Recycle Bin, you may be able to recover completely. Of course make a new backup of any files you revert to older version(s).
