I'd really like to see task state awareness in this. That way we can run multiple scheduled tasks without guessing how much time in between will be needed. Like running a task that installs only the non-exclusive updates and then right after running one that installs only the exclusive updates. The task engine could then see the state of the first task and once it returns complete it could kick off the second one.

I really think this would be a great feature. In our environment we have several applications that for one reason or another need to be shutdown before a system reboot. It would be extremely helpful if a job with a batch of patches/updates was sent to a machine could do pre and post operations. In my case, I would want to run a net stop <service> command before any patches were applied and then (if a reboot was not required) net start <service>. It would seem that this could be a scenario many System Admins face. Maybe I'm wrong?

I agree. Being able to run pre- and post-patching scripts/commands (on a server level, not an individual update level) would allow for simple tasks like stopping and starting services and even more advanced tasks like calling application APIs and looking for specific return codes prior to patching. This type of feature would go a long way toward allowing us to fully automate patching.
