Device Monitoring Templates

When adding new nodes it would be useful to be able to define a template that can be used to apply to the device e.g.

I add a new device and select one of:

Template 1: Standard Device Template - Cisco ASA

Template 2: Standard Device Template - Juniper SRX

Template 3: Standard Device Template - Fortinet

This template includes the Polling Type, Polling Credentials to be used, Pollers to be added and NCM Credentials.

Therefore adding a template reduces the amount of information to fill in that might be repeated for all nodes.

Yours is a good idea, and I can see it saving time and reducing mistakes and frustrations.

Until SW implements this good idea, we're sort of left to try to make all of our nodes identical so a standard template can fit all of them.  Some things are easy--use the right Custom Properties in each device / category, keep the login credentials identical through TACACS or RADIUS, make your snmp-v3 credentials read-only and identical on all devices, etc.

But there comes a time when you can't make a Silk Purse from a Sow's Ear, when your standard pre-defined polling or NCM backup solution runs into something unique.

The thing that comes to mind, outside of the Custom Properties (which CAN be a pretty cool tool to group devices and manage them differently) is to build a Custom Profile for unique vendors or machine types.  I did this long ago, before NPM / NCM could correctly identify certain devices automatically with 100% accuracy, and apply the right templates to them.

Have you looked into how Groups and Custom Properties and NCM Profiles might be leveraged to make your life easier?  At least until SW implements your good idea?
