DPA Enhancements

Hello! We had a meeting with SW's DPA SME's and our SQL DBA's. Our DBA's would like to see the following items added to DPA in a future release:

select * from sys.availability_read_only_routing_lists

SELECT replica_server_name
, read_only_routing_url
, secondary_role_allow_connections_desc
FROM sys.availability_replicas

DPA alerting enhancements would be nice as well, so AG and Instances can be monitored at the same time. We will use SAM SQL monitors for this until DPA has been enahanced.

Hi Rick, Julie, Greg and Andrei,

Thank you for your time on the WebEx.
During the WebEx Andrei discussed your potential use cases and wants:

You have a use case where you need to Register via Listener and separate Node.
You need a way to do both. This can be done via License for Listener, and Licenses per each Node.
But, this will cause Duplicate Monitoring and may through an error in DPA.
This will also cause extra over-head on the Instance due to Duplicate Monitoring via DPA.

I have researched your Customer Portal and found the following CustomerSuccess/MindTouch article that should help.

Regarding Generating Alerts against Listener with Application Intent read-only,
DPA is currently not able to handle this due to the default jTDS JDBC Driver.
We may be switching to MS default driver in a future release.
System option com.confio.ignite.jdbc.sqlserver.useJtdsDriver=false allows to disable JTDS driver usage (MSSQL driver will be used instead).
This option may allow DPA to follow the 'Application Intent - Read-only' node.

Jamin also discussed the possibilities of using SAM for your 'monitoring' as opposed to using the DataBase Performance Analyzer - due to DPA being more of a Performance Analyzer - and, not necessarily an availability monitor.
SAM appears to be your best Option for Monitoring. DPA is an excellent Analyzer regarding Wait Times and Latency analysis.

You would like a Read-Only Routing List requirement within Availability Replicas from the Instance to show in DPA.
This may need to be a Feature Request for DPA, but SAM may be the better product for your variety of AG Monitoring.
Jamin displayed and demonstrated a few Templates via SAM SQL Server User Experience Monitor that may address your needs.

Also, you want:
replica_server_name , read_only_routing_url , secondary_role_allow_connections_desc
FROM sys.availability_replicas

I understand you will submit a FR against DPA via THWACK, and post the link to this Case.
Once I have that, I will proceed with an Internal JIRA request via Jamin's suggestion.

After I file the Internal JIRA Feature Request, I will Archive this Case to that FR.
