We are heavily using FileSharing feature & providing this option to all our AD users, but the only think missing is security.
Is there a way we can restrict few AD users to use this feature & others not to see this.
And have the option to not allow users that we create in the serv-u system to have this access. Right now it is an all or nothing situation.
+1
It would be extremely helpful to limit access to file sharing, based on AD group membership.
I tested the Serv-U MFT 15.0 for our company. This would be a necessary feature for us to buy this solution. Pleas integrate it by AD group membership.
We would also appreciate more fine grained permission settings (i.e. what users can check/uncheck when sharing files, password complexity, etc.)
We are looking to use this system for file transfers with external parties and in most cases we really don't want the file sharing option available. If they enter an invalid SMTP address (anything that is not one of our internal SMTP domain names) our Exchange server won't allow this through - but in this case we're going to end up with junk emails in our system.
LDAP access lets me allow HTTP or not & allow FTP or not - but agree with netmin that much finer control of options is required, at least so that we could have one LDAP group that grants access only to file sharing & another only the web client.
Essentially, file sharing should only be an option for my internal staff to use for adhoc send or recieve operations, where the web client would be useful for a group of people to be able to collaborate.
I have implemented this by running a separate site just for file sharing and then using LDAP authentication back to AD for the users so I can restrict by group. This works for me but means that from a user's persective it's a completely different "system"
We have been running Serv-U for over 7 years and we have had our fair share of trials through the years, version 12 was particularly memorable for all the wrong reasons. I feel it's a major oversight to not have the ability to disable the new file sharing feature at the group or user level. I went ahead and logged a case number # 540129.
I would suggest to create a separate request for this here, so others can provide more great comments like here.
Thanks for so many comment and good feedback. This is something we are looking at, check out What We're Working On - Serv-U FTP Server, Serv-U MFT Server & FTP Voyager.
We surely are also looking for this Option
With the new release 15.1.0 it is possible now to selectively disable and enable File Sharing on global, domain, group and user level with many limits specifically for file sharing on all levels (e.g. enforcement of password, expiration of file share and many other).
But that is the group and user levels within Serv-U, not Active Directory, right? If I am incorrect, can you please explain how to do it correctly so that certain users in this Active Directory domain, Active directory group can have all clients available, but anyone else only gets the file sharing client - for instance.
I haven't been able to have it discern between Active directory groups at the same domain/OU/../group levels within Active Directory.
