When certain network appliances are configured with broadcast storm protection a warning message similar to the following is displayed: "A Broadcast storm detected on FA0/1. A packet filter action has been applied on the interface." Although this warning may not cause any harm to the network, the critical infrastructure networks our company protects rely heavily on availability and timing mechanisms. As a result, the above warning message raises serious red flags to our system operators/maintainers and their managers. The concern is that the Network Topology Mapper could cause a broadcast storm and result in a system outage which would be extremely detrimental to our business. If we were able to adjust the packets per second used during the discovery process to an amount below the threshold on the network appliances, our concerns would be alleviated. It is understood that this may result in a slower discovery process but the adjustment/reduction of network traffic would give the company more peace of mind when using the product. I assume my company is not the only one out there that relies heavily on the availability of our networks for production so this enhancement would likely pay off.
