Add Interfaces in "Unplugged" State

When I go to add a new switch to SolarWinds, I like to collect all of the interface statistics. However, if I select all interfaces to add to monitoring, and I fail to turn off my Interface Down alert, I get killed by alerts for all of the interfaces which are down.

It would be great if there was an option when adding interfaces to automatically set "Display as Unplugged, rather than Down", to avoid these types of alerts.

Traditionally, I only monitor uplinks and business critical ports, so adding only the active ports made sense. However, UDT is changing that mentality...and now it almost makes sense to monitor all access ports as described above.

I've been thinking of ways to detect unconnected but active ports so we can report usage and thus availability.

Perhaps, once a port is connected, this is recorded in SolarWinds, and then we could alarm on "was connected but now it isn't".

There would be different port states: active and connected, active but not yet connected, active and was connected but now isn't, and inactive.

That, of course, also depends on the device and how it reports its ports.

Then we could also detect when someone plugs something into an active unused port.

It would of course then fall to the networking person to update such ports when they are about to disconnect them, manually stopping it being monitored.

UDT is definitely useful to help with handling device outages, both planned and unexpected. Keeping it accurately showing what ports are connected to what can be a challenge.
