I think that it would extremely useful to have the ability to setup the alerts to use the members of the groups setup for the login. In my environment we are setup to use login from Active Directory. We don't use exchange but I do have the Email Address field filled in the with the correct email address.
I suppose if you could add a custom property for this it would also work. I don't think this is possible yet.
