Allow duplicated modern dashboards to be added as a tab in modern dashboards

We have multiple regions and want the ability to put duplicated dashboards as TAB dashboards in modern dashboards.

Take the network team as an example. We have a main modern dashboard showing enterprise system health like ISE, WAN, VPN's, etc. I can create a modern dashboard for Region 0 equipment and add it as a tab. To add Region 1 equipment tab we have to recreate every widget.

It would save significant amount of time to let us duplicate the Region 0 dashboard, just change a line in the SWQL queries in each widget, and then add it as a tab to the main dashboard.

We are a large healthcare system which means we also have hundreds of applications that all need region based dashboards easily created.

I was able to accomplish this using global filters. Then I just added two widgets to my dashboard. One allows you to select the filters you want to apply, and the second shows what filters are applied to the current view. I didn't have to create a tab for each region, instead it just updates the current tab.

Hi @russbishop , this is a very interesting solution. Could you share more details on it? How did you build the widgets, how do you add one filter over another, how do you get the list of currently applied filters, are you able to also remove filters one by one?

It isn't just about it being able to be added again as a tabbed, it no longer exists as a standalone dashboard either. If they just duplicated the dashboard in the background into the tabs that would solve everyone's' issues.

The end goal is not to have to manually create identical dashboards for each tabbed dashboard created to be able to use tabbed dashboards. It is basically a worthless feature to use on more than one dashboard.

I think what you need is to have the option to duplicate (clone) widgets when duplicating the dashboard. The option to duplicate the dashboard is there is Manage Dashboards, but the copied dashboard is still using the widgets from the original one, so you have to manually unlink each widget to be able to modify it.

As I can see, there are SWIS verbs that you could use to do this via API, but this requires writing some code.

Giving some attention as I started working in 2025.1 just to find this issue within 2 days of dealing with multiple dashboards needing to reuse dashboards. Also ran into funky issue that a copied dashboard is not available to use as a dashboard tab... going to check latest release notes if there were 'tweaks'.

I opened a case for this. It is going to be a "feature request". Currently you have to duplicate dashboards to use them standalone or for each tabbed dashboard.

I ran into this issue, attempted to manually edit in the database, and couldn't. I open a support case about being unable to edit and what I attempted. Turns out that current versions allowing for dashboard tabs is leveraging the UniqueKey field in Dashboard tab. What happens during the duplication process is that the ParentId field is populated and because of the ParentId, the UniqueKey label is ignored and left as NULL. When this workaround is done per duplicated dashboard, the duplicate will be visible to select as a dashboard tab.

The workaround because you can't use 'Enable Table Editing', you'll have to run an Update Statement to populate the UniqueKey for the duplicated dashboard. You can opt to keep or remove the ParentId. I chose to remove the ParentID. There is no effect to the widgets and the linking relationships is another table for widgets.

The UPDATE statement will update the Dashboard table with setting the UniqueKey with the label with underscore, no spaces (I recommend to keep close to how you labeled your duplicate dashboard) and mark the ParentID as NULL WHERE the DashboardID is give and the UniqueKey is NULL. The result should affect only the one dashboard ID and 1 row updated in that table.

Here is the statement to use: (DISCLAIMER: if you aren't familiar or uncomfortable with Database Manager and performing UPDATE statements... don't do it... wait for the release that addresses this issue. Also take a backup of table or DB just in case)
