Since many installations are publicly accessable, the base OS will have some standardized hardening applied which make the installation imposible to perform without disabling some of the hardening.
The hardening that inhibits installation on LINUX systems is the dis-allowing of exacutable files in the '/tmp' and '/var/tmp' file systems. So an option that allows the installer to specify an alternate temporary work space is needed.
