Customize/Set the Machine Type

Some nodes don’t report their machine types correctly (e. g. net-snmp agent). There are also still a lot of unknown machine types.

The ability to set or customize the machine type would help to remedy such situations. It would also greatly extend the capabilities of View by Device Type feature.

I am experiencing the same issue with the Nortel/Avaya equipment. An example would be the following:

One Passport would report machine type "Rapid City Communications". Another Passport would report machine type "ERS-8610".

One ERS 5520-48T-PWR would report machine type "Synoptics", while another node withe the same exact hardware would report machine type "ERS-5520-48T-PWR.

With that said, it would be very helpful to be able to change the information within machine type to Nortel Networks. This way we can lump in the Rapid City, and Synoptics into one machine type.

Any thoughts??

Adding machine types should not be such a complex issue. Why aren't these stored in the database so they can be easily and dynamically updated?

Check to see if the SysObjectID is different between devices.

this is so frustrating with embedded java or embedded linux, they all report net-snmp instead of the actual vendor.

Its even worse when they upgrade or switch platform

I agree, this is frustrating. I have multiple nodes with an unknown machine type. This should fill in automatically, but also be a User editable field with the ability to create new types.
