Polling Serial Numbers

I have seen a dozen posts or so dating back six years, with people asking the same question, but no true solutions. How can you Poll Serial Numbers on a List? I have created lists, played with existing lists, and tried suggestions I have found here but still get incomplete results. Some S/N's show, some do not. What am I missing?

The modules (NPM, SAM, NCM, etc.) running on the platform are already retrieving the serial numbers (where possible based on the target device). The data is stored according to the device information provided by the vendor (assuming they have implemented it according to an industry standard).

Retrieving serial numbers is highly dependent on which modules you have - that's why there isn't a single 'report' on the Orion platform - it's too dependent on the modules. If a report for Cisco Serial numbers that requires NCM is run on a system without NCM, then the report would error out.

It also depends on "how deep" you want to go with serial numbers. Do you just want the computer? How about the hard drives? For network devices, do you just want the main device, the line cards, the power supplies, all the members in a switch stack? These are all stored in different way depending on how the hardware manufacturer is handling how they report the information.

Unfortunately, we are reliant upon whatever is provided by the vendors. Some use the standard OIDs (if we are talking SNMP) or WMI Classes (if we are talking WMI), but others just decide to do what they want.

I appreciate the reply, and I understand the complexity of gathering S/N's of peripheral devices like the ones you describe. I, however, was/am searching for S/N's for just switches, independent and individual nodes of which the only complexity would be retrieving the S/N's of slave switches when stacked. Around 90% of our infrastructure is Cisco, with a handful of Juniper and a couple Brocade tossed in for good measure. After meddling with UnDP's for some time yesterday and scouring the web I was able to get about 95% of what I need. The downside is that I could not do it on one table, which I will be trying to refine today. I know it probably does not sound like it, but I really do appreciate the response. Only frustrated that it took hours of fiddling do something that seems so simple, at least seems so at surface level.

What I found is that vintage Cisco Equipment like Switches, Routers and standard cisco ASA, yep no problem you can get the serial number as it is pulled by NCM by using the the login that is assigned to the device. Issue is as with most people on here I guess, we also run HP Switches, the newer Cisco device like Meraki and Cisco Firepower ASA devices. So at present I am having to setup a UnDP to pull the serial number via an OID on SNMP, which can be a right pain to find sometimes and usually ends up with me using SNMPWalk to find the correct OID...

Another option would be to add a Serial Number field on the Device Poller Package
