New to Application Performance Monitor - Questions on Add New Application Monitor

We are evaluating APM.  The hope is to be able to monitor the functionality of an industry specific application.  

 

The simplest way would be to check if a particular process is in running state.  Is there a way for APM to check

for the running status of a particular process on a host?

 

Also - when I tried to use select the SNMP template during setup - it limited me to 

• Cisco CallManager
•   CiscoSecure ACS (via SNMP)
•   Exchange Server (via SNMP)
•   SQL Server (via SNMP)
•   Windows DNS Server (via SNMP)
• 
  
  ...what's up with that?  I there no way to be able to test for an OID and value that I want to monitor?

Lastly is there some way to measure end user experience of a non-standard application using APM?

Hello mmedwid,

To check if specific process is running there are two ways (I suppose that you already have specific host added in Orion):

 

Use  wizard:

1. Go to Admin->APM Settings

2. Click "Find Processes, Services, and Performance Counters".

3. Select "Process Monitor - ####". If you have SNMP enabled on target machine, I would suggest SNMP version. If you have not, WMI can be used as well.

4. Enter target machine IP address or click "Browse" and select machine there.

5. Select process that you want to monitor.

6. Follow wizard steps.

 

Create monitor manually: 

1. Go to Admin->APM Settings

2. Select "Create new application monitor template" (It's under "Manage Application Monitor Templates" paragraph)

3. Name your template (For example: "Process XYZ monitor") and click "Add Component Monitor" button just above "Submit" and "Cancel"

4.  Open category "Process and Service Component Monitors"

5. Select "Process Monitor - ####". If you have SNMP enabled on target machine, I would suggest SNMP version. If you have not, WMI can be used as well.

6. Form for monitor settings appears. Enter "Process Name" (name of process as is in task manager).

7. Click "Submit".

8. Now Find your newly created template (If you didn't specify "tags", click on "All" group and find it by name).

9. Select template and click "Assign to Node". Select target computer and follow wizard.

 

To create custom SNMP monitor follow same steps as for process monitor ("Create monitor manually"), just when adding component monitor to template, select "Custom Component Monitors" and there select "SNMP monitor". There you can set custom OID to monitor.

 

What do you mean by "Non-standard application"? There are various user experience monitors under "User Experience Component Monitors".
