SAM Server Role Based Monitoring Assignment

I would like the ability to define a server role such as a web server ans associate application monitors to that role and then have the app monitors associated with that role to the server. This way I can create a role such as IIS web server and then associate a group on monitors to that role.

Just so I understand correctly

You have a Group defined with dynamic node membership based on Server Role attribute
This Group has application monitors associated with it.
You would assign a Server Role [e.g. IIS web server]
The system should then automatically assign the application monitors based on the Group membership

Does this describe what you are looking to accomplish?

Is this for just SAM or is it custom pollers in NPM also?

This is already possible today using the 'isServer' property in a Dynamic group, which you can then be coupled with additional properties you might want defined such as OS, location, etc. etc..

Once the group is created, simply assign your template to the group.

Do you know a way to do this for appinsight for SQL/WEB?

Assigning Appinsight application templates to a group is not currently supported, any work arounds?

Expanding on the Template Custom property attributes.

I use asset inventory for windows servers, I find which application names I can pull from there, I drop them into a custom property, setup a group with a dynamic query for that CP.

for example, we use app_1, app_2, app_3. as the custom properties. 1,2,3 is the tier. So I set

core_app_1 = IIS or Apache,

Core_App_3 = SQL or oracle.

with a query like this, (I run them on demand, but trying to schedule it..)

set nodescustomproperties.core_app_3 = 'SQL Server Compact 3.5'

From Nodescustomproperties

join assetinventory_software a on nodescustomproperties.nodeid=a.nodeid

Then I create a group called SQL server Compact, with a dynamic query for Core_app_3 = SQL Server Compact 3.5.

Then assign the SQL Server compact 3.5 template to that group.

We are heading towards a more agile infrastructure, where servers will popup and disappear all the time, so the need to automate application template assignments is paramount.

if anyone has a thought on how to do something similar with the Linux Version of Asset inventory, that would be wonderful.

That didn't work. I created a group. I added the template to the group and then I added a server to the group and it didn't pick up the application template.
