I have been asked to raise this on behalf of a customer:
Current Issue
When adding a vCenter to SolarWinds, users are required to enter credentials, and the system retrieves certain subnet and IP details. However, there is currently no option to schedule automatic discovery of new ESXi hosts within Center.
In Network Discovery, there is an expectation that scheduling options will be available for VMware discovery, but when adding a vCenter server, the process skips the final discovery scheduling step. Instead, it immediately discovers hosts and collects metrics, without offering ongoing automated discovery.
Proposed Enhancement
- Introduce a scheduler for VMware vCenter discovery, allowing administrators to configure automatic rediscovery of newly added ESXi hosts.
- Ensure that the Network Discovery scheduling option works for VMware environments, similar to how it functions for other device types.
- If the scheduling option currently displayed in the interface is not intended to be used for VMware discovery, this should be clarified, or the UI should be adjusted accordingly to avoid confusion.
Business Impact
- Reduces manual effort by enabling automatic detection of new ESXi hosts.
- Ensures that monitoring remains up-to-date without requiring administrators to manually initiate rediscovery.
- Aligns VMware discovery with the broader Network Discovery functionality in SolarWinds.
This improvement would enhance usability and streamline VMware infrastructure monitoring within the SolarWinds platform.
