When you get into a few 10s of thousands of devices that you monitor and your are still growing you realize it is a real pain to go and clean up other groups' mess. Not every device is a critical life or death of the company device. Some are simply non-critical production nodes or lab nodes that if they go down they often get put on the back burner with the comment "we are considering decomming this next year so we don't care if it is down." Of course months turn in to a year or two. I'm still finding many nodes that have no alerts associated with them.
There are many scenario where SolarWinds (SW) fills with nodes that need to be deleted and one a group sending out 50-100 emails a month asking other groups what is their intention with these down nodes.
There needs to be a way to get up auto unmanage/delete. A good example would be:
- Email goes out by SW stating the following nodes have been down for 30 days and will be unmanaged.
- Email goes out and states the following nodes are unmanaged for 30 days and will be delete in 8 hours.
Obliviously, the number of days can be adjusted per company and per location. However, not spending tremendous man-hours tracking down and manually decomming servers would be VERY helpful.
THANKS!
