If devices get wiped and reinstalled with the same name, when they're added to DRE there's now two entries for the same name. Having the option available to automatically merge devices with the same name would save a lot of busy work. It would also allow the use of DRE for non-persistent VDI (the agent is installed via script every time the VM reboots. instead of creating a new device it uses an existing device of the same name).
