Interface Down is Good / Up is Bad

I would like to be able to "flag / mark / designate" an interface as a backup interface. So that when the interface is "down or in standby" it is the required state and therefore good, but when it goes active there is problem. The icon could be Blue as apposed to Red. When the interface changes to "up or active" it would let us know that the fail-over worked and that we are in backup situation.

There are some managers who see a red icon and think that there something wrong and it be must be fixed.

Just a thought here, but could you instead change the properties of the interface to "Display interface as unplugged rather than down", and then use an alert to notify if the interface ever comes up?

Thanks for the thought but unplugged is just that, there is no cable present. The cable needs to be present as this is the fail-over interface.

I'm pretty sure that the setting really applies to the status of an interface, versus the actual physical presence of a cable. For example, I use this setting on all my access switches where I don't care if a port is down -- the cable is still technically present, but the state of the interface is down.

The real benefit of the setting is that it doesn't show up as a down interface in Orion, which sounds like it fits your need. You don't care if the interface is down (that's how you want it) but you just want to know when it comes up.
