If I want to set up a blackout period for a specific alert from 2am - 4am every night, I have to create seven separate blackouts.
Great idea, but I'd like to see it taken even further. DPA Blackout creation needs a day selection menu (in addition to "ALL DAYS", "WEEKDAYS", OR "WEEKENDS" to give full flexibility.
Similar to the SQL Server job scheduling:
Compare to DPA - even the hours/minutes are two separate fields on the setup screen:
For me - I'd like it to say something like "Blackout Start/Blackout End" rather than 'Stop Alerting/Start Alerting".
I'm creating a Blackout, let's be consistent with the terminology
Yeah, this is a lot of fun to set up - and that's just one alert:
@gcp: I agree with each of your points, although the "Occurs once at:" and "Occurs every:" part wouldn't really apply because we just want to pick a range.
But if somebody out there has a need for a 5 minute blackout period on Mondays and Thursdays starting at 55 minutes after every hour between 6:55 AM and 8:00 PM, DPA shouldn't get in their way. :-)It would also be cool to set up named blackout periods and be able to link multiple alerts to the same blackout period (and multiple blackout periods to the same alert), kind of like adding schedules to an agent job. We sort of have that using Alert Groups, but not quite.
All the ideas mentioned here are great and would be helpful. I also would love to have the ability to edit an existing blackout. Currently all I can do is to delete it and add another one, even if I only want to change the end time for example.
Since at least 9.5 (and probably earlier than that), there is an edit button for each blackout. Here's a screen capture from my 10.0.352 (cropped to just show the first of my many blackouts). Look in the lower right corner of the image below.
It's absolutely ridiculous that DBAs have been asking for this capability for > 12 years!!! Apparently Orion has it. All we want is a calendar that we can select days of the month etc. and then time for those days. To go along with the other examples already mentioned, a monthly maintenance window REQUIRES the creation of a blackout period EVERY month OR you have a blackout every week during the same day/time and that IS NOT what we want or is intended. At least 1 Support case for this was: 00584719. And the suggested solution was a link with directions on how to create, edit, delete blackouts. Less than helpful.
