Allow transform formulas on UnDP Labels in addition to transforms on values

We have a use case where we pull a table from SNMP via a UnDP, and the column we want to use for Label i s being returned as a decimal-format string instead of a human-readable string. Requesting the ability to apply transformations to labels, so we can convert these strings into human-readable ones.

Example below, redacted full decimal strings for security.

Why not extract the same data using SQL, from the database, and then use CASE WHEN statements to resolve your problem?

Once you have worked out the CustomPollerAssignmentID (have a look in CustomPollerAssignment) you should be able to find this data in the CustomPollerStatistics tables (start with CustomPollerStatistics_Detail).

The SQL is then used to populate a report, which can then be displayed as an element, on your view(s) of choice.

1. I have no idea how to do that, I'm not proficient with SQL

2. I'll need to alert on these metrics at some point, which I'm sure would be even more complicated with cusotm SQL

As Orion is "databased", now is as good a time as any to learn!

Believe me, if you are looking after Orion, learning SQL (and then SWQL) will be beneficial.

1. Open the SolarWinds DB Manager (Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Orion\DatabaseManager.exe), or MS SQL Studio, or any other DB tool you use.

2. Connect to your SolarWinds DB and first run the following SQL to resolve your CustomPollerAssingmentID (the unique ID for the poller):

SELECT cpa.CustomPollerAssignmentID , cpa.AssignmentName, cpa.CustomPollerID, n.Caption

FROM CustomPollerAssignment cpa

INNER JOIN Nodes n ON n.NodeID = cpa.NodeID

3. Look at the AssignmentName, which will match your SNMP poller name and the device(s) (this will be the n.Caption column returned) it is applied to, and find the poller of interest.

Take note of the CustomPollerAssignmentID.

4. Now back to the SQL, and have a look at the CustomPollerStatistics_Detail table:

SELECT DateTime, Status, RowID

FROM [SolarWinds].[dbo].[CustomPollerStatistics_Detail]

WHERE CustomPollerAssignmentID = '<enter CustomPollerAssignmentID here>'

This will show you the data held by your poller within the details table (unaggregated data in the details tables).

5. SQL CASE can be used to change the returned values to any you need (https://www.w3schools.com/sql/func_mysql_case.asp).

Here is an example, that will extract the last polled value (you may need to adjust the -5 minutes to suit your polling rate):

SELECT DateTime, Status,

CASE RowID

WHEN '7.100.10.102.97.110' THEN 'Derek and Clive'

WHEN '7.100.10.102.97.110' THEN 'Exploding Thing'

WHEN 42 THEN 'Life, the universe and everything'

WHEN 10 THEN 11

ELSE RowID

END AS Label

FROM CustomPollerStatistics_Detail

WHERE CustomPollerAssignmentID = '<enter CustomPollerAssignmentID here>'

AND a.DAteTime > DATEADD(mm, -5, GETUTCDATE())

You can also use wildcards (the % symbol) and other logic to assist.

BUT BEFORE YOU START THERE!!!!

Check the table out, find you data, make sense of it for yourself!

SELECT TOP(50) DateTime, Status, RowID

FROM CustomPollerStatistics_Detail

WHERE CustomPollerAssignmentID = '<enter CustomPollerAssignmentID here>'

I hope this doesn't put you off to much, as it so worth learning.

And once you have gotten your head around this, the alerting will be simple, as you will already understand how the data is represented within the DB.
