Alerts Via Modem For Critical Systems - TAPI Communcations

I know there is an alerting system via modem that is tied to NotePage, but we like to control this ourselves without third party intervention. We host multiple Internet facing web servers for our clients and in the rare instance of our Internet service going down, simple email alerts would also fail as well. We also have to rely on our Internal email system being available as well.

So...currently we are monitoring everything within 2 separate SolarWinds products, that is NPM/WPM alerting engine for simple email alerts and IPMonitor for dial out cellular, pager alerts. Because of the dual monitoring of some devices, this requires we update products in both places and to put devices in Unmanage mode(NPM/WPM) or Suspend mode (IPMonitor) for system maintenance, which happens almost daily.. We also have to license IPMonitor as a separate product when the only thing we use it for is TAPI communications for a few critical nodes.

Just wanted to chip in by describing how we achieve this. For multiple sites, local and remote, we use Android phones running an SMS gateway app which interfaces with internal systems.

Many apps exist that can do this and much more, such as two way comms, but for us it is used as a last resort comm device to send out alerts, irrespective of wifi or lan availability. You can set it up to perform serialized tasks.

The phone gets power from USB and is obviously battery backed. Interfacing with it can be done through email, http, API, AT etc. Other than that just make sure nothing is set to auto update and that everything starts up automatically in case power source was cut and battery ran out.
