From what I've seen throughout these forums, a lot of these issues seem to have not been a part of the previous version of IPAM's GUI. I joined on after the new GUI took over, so I have no experience with the old version. This is based entirely on my experience using the current iteration of IPAM's GUI.
I'm a part of an enterprise environment that manages 10s of thousands of private IP addresses. The current GUI presents challenges to this environment that are primarily slow and time consuming. Below are some scenarios that I and other IT staff have encountered.
- Page refresh - issues that I have when the page refreshes; it happens whenever I make a change to an item and passively in the background
- Retain filters in DHCP Scope Management and Subnet Management. Any time the page refreshes, all of my filters are wiped out and I have to toggle them again to move to the next item.
- In areas with multiple pages, such as in Subnet Management when you have more than 100 IPs in a subnet, if the web page refreshes, stay on the last page you worked on. In our experience, being on the 2nd page or higher of subnets when the web page refreshes sends us back to page 1. This is especially problematic if we're trying to make changes on anything larger than a /26.
- Potentially have an option to temporarily halt page refreshes if other changes can’t be made. When editing multiple IPs, the page refreshes after every change and can significantly hinder workflow due to time loss waiting for the refresh. This combined with the other issues creates a tedious work environment.
- Have the option to manually resize columns. I see no reason why I can’t have a comically large column if I so choose. If I have a comment for an IP address that stretches from one monitor to the other, that’s a configuration I should be allowed to have so long as I can see the information I want or need.
- “View details” on the Subnet Management interface would be better served as a popup window. Having a separate window is fine when accessed directly from another source, but for the purposes of the Subnet Management window, the information displayed under “View details" generally doesn’t warrant transitioning to an entirely different web page when working on multiple IPs.
- I know it’s been mentioned in other requests, but I’ll reiterate it here: expand element searching in Subnet Management. There are 25 columns in my setup that can be displayed for a subnet. Allow me to search information pertaining to those columns directly from the normal search bar on the same page. Advanced search serves a purpose in tracking down advanced information across all subnets, but it shouldn’t be required in order to search for known details in a single element, i.e. the selected subnet.
- We use the “Comment” field to provide manual, descriptive information on our used IPs. This information can currently only be searched in the Advanced Search web page. This is especially tedious if we have multiple IPs we need to interface with that have similar comment fields, but we have to go back and forth between web pages.
- Some of our employees are also requesting the ability to expand displayed items on a subnet page. Right now, there are only options for 10, 20, 50, or 100 items. It would be nice to display more than that and/or any amount of our choosing. I understand if there are limits such as being unable to display 1000 items from a /22, but at least for /24’s, it would be nice to display all 256 items on one page.
- Rework the web page display when resizing the window. Currently, IPAM windows must be at or close to full screen with a certain monitor size in order to properly display all elements of the GUI. If you shrink the window, say, to have two side-by-side IPAM windows, you lose the ability to side scroll without using the middle-mouse button, cannot change item display counts, and cannot navigate pages. I have a laptop with a 15-inch screen that is just barely the right screen size to fit an IPAM window at full screen. The page numbers and item display count are halfway cut off of the screen.
