map completely flat?

I am new to this job and the person that was here before me left absolutely nothing in the ways of documentation. I am hoping this software can help me get some sort of topology together. I know that my network is flat as we are all in the 172.31.x.x what I was hoping to be able to see is what switches and routers are connected to what devices. So far this tool isnt giving me that information. I'm sure I'm doing somethign wrong, but I cant figure out what. Any help is appreciated.

Are the devices being identified when creating your map? What I mean is do they show up as Cisco, Dell, HP, etc?

I don't think so. I already started a rescan so I cant see what it had before but if I remember right it had IP addresses, host names and something else, but I do not think it identified it as Cisco, 3Com etc.
