Can include the option of making a particular custom property mandatory (cases in which we surely want the property to be filled )
Great request for when you have other Groups or Admins that are allowed to manage nodes and they aren't the SolarWinds Admin who built the Framework of the system.
This happens so often, and it can easily break the node from being able to fall into alerts that are designed around Custom Properties.
Yeah, exactly my reason for putting up this request.
Thanks Richard for summarizing the need behind the request.
No problem! Glad you got the request up here. This is a good one. I know all of us here at Loop1Systems have passed it around to be voted on.
This would be a very useful feature for us as well!
Nice idea!
Great idea, if this was available I would use it.
This would save time as a check and balance, to prevent us from having to go back and fill in information that was missed at discovery.
Does anybody from Solarwinds even sees such feature request??? If yes, can we atleast get a reply back from them on the feasibilty of incorporating this feature??
Nice to see more people interested in this feature but I already put in the same request months ago: http://thwack.solarwinds.com/ideas/1268
Everyone should vote twice so it gets even more notice
Be sure to vote both of these up!
Yes, this is a great suggestion. On this topic, it would be helpful if validation was done of the custom properties. So often we have a situation where people add nodes to NPM but make innocent typos. This can cause havoc. If there was a drop down list of suggested items, like the SNMP v2c community names, thid would reduce the number of issues with innocent typos.
In 10.4 and beyond there is an ability to create a drop down list for a Custom Property forcing a user to pick between pre-defined values. This should help you out as only an Admin can add new values on the fly. Slow this is becoming more intuitive. Lets just hope the mandatory CP's get added to the mix as well.
A nice work around in the mean time is doing SQL Triggers to populate values based upon certain values met when the node is added. There is a nice write up on this here written by one of my co-workers .
