Rule Based Automated Deployment of Appliation Monitoring

I would love to see application templates automatically be deployed to nodes where they don't already exist based on rules. I imagine building these rules would be essentially the same as building Alerts but the action would be to apply the application template.

For example, I could create a rule that says if the node is Windows and Custom Node Property "Environment" is set to Compliance and monitoring type is SNMP then deploy my Application Template called "Windows Compliance Apps (SNMP)". I could then set that rule to run once every 6 hours so any nodes that match would have the necessary application template deployed.

You can do this now but you have to do it via Groups.

Create a group
Add a dynamic query that meets your criteria
In the Manage Templates view, click the Assign to Group button

The system will automatically assign the template to all members of that group. When a new member joins the group, the system will assign the application template to that node. You have the option of the system deleting the monitor if that node leaves the group.

You can click on the group in the Assigned To column to see more details about assignments. This demonstration group doesn't have any nodes but if it did, the Application Monitors tab would show all of the monitors.

I was able to get this work and it's pretty awesome. We will definitely be using this in the future for automated deployments of Application Templates. I can't believe they managed to slip this kind of functionality into the product without me noticing. I have always loved the concept of the groups and have always felt they went mostly unused so I am happy to see that SolarWinds is finally leveraging them with some other core features of the product.
