Config upload

I'm new to Orion NCM and am currently evaluating it for potential use in our environment. I see that in the device template for cisco IOS there is a UploadConfigIndirect option but I don't see this available on the web page. Is there a way to make this available through the web under tasks?

Hi tundra29. We appreciate you taking to the time to evaluate Orion NCM!

If you login to the NCM client application (Start > SolarWinds Orion Network Configuration Manager > Orion Network Configuration Manager), you'll be able to change this setting globally or for each of your devices individually.

In the NCM client application device tree, select one or more devices, right-click and select edit devices. In the edit device details screen, you'll see a section called Communication. From there you can choose "Transfer configs using" to be TFTP. This tells NCM to use the the indirect command specified in the device template when downloading or uploading configurations from both web and client application.

Thank you for the reply. I haven't been working with an SE. When I select transfer using tftp it looks like it is using tftp but I am selecting the startup config and NCM is copying to running. I want to copy to startup. When I look in the device file the variable is config type. When is that variable. I would think it would startup or running.

Ah okay, thanks for the clarification. That's correct. By default, we only overwrite the startup config when you are uploading a startup config.

When uploading a running config via TFTP, we overwrite the running config and then we provide you the option to copy the running config to the startup config (select save to NVRAM).

If you want a different default behavior, you'd need to edit the device template and change the UploadConfigIndirect command to always write to the startup config regardless of config type.

Here’s what you’d have to do to make this happen for all config uploads:
1.    Configure the device to use TFTP for “Transfer Configs” setting. Requesting of configs can still be done via SSH/Telnet.
2.    Edit the device template corresponding to the device type
               Change:
                   <Command Name="UploadConfigIndirect" Value="copy ${TransferProtocol}://${StorageAddress}/${StorageFilename} ${ConfigType}${CRLF}${CRLF}"/>
                To:
                   <Command Name="UploadConfigIndirect" Value="copy ${TransferProtocol}://${StorageAddress}/${StorageFilename} startup${CRLF}${CRLF}"/>
