Out-of-Box Scan Results

I would like to open a thread simply addressing those questions, concerns, wouldn't it be nice thoughts that arise as you use the NTM product.

I would also encourage comparisons to products that may provide or display the results of a scan somewhat better or differently. This information should help everyone and support the evolution of a better product. *** This entry is just the start of the discussion ***

Out-of-Box Scan Results compared between Solarwinds Network Topology Mapper and the earlier LANsurveyor Express. Using the default settings of each product to scan the same LAN subnet. No changes on the reporting devices between scans. Looking at the results one may think that required device protocols were blocked or not enabled on some devices; however less devices were identified using LSE some fields such as Computer Name were shown an the device icon in the LSE scan where as this was missing from the NTM scan. I'm not sure why?

Notice that LSE identified the NetBios/Computer name, listed the IP, and attached the device to the wired LAN.

Notice that NTM did not identify the NetBios/Computer name or add the device to the wired LAN. I'm not sure what Unidentified_10 is?

As mentioned I am a new user of NTM and just reporting what I see initially. Not finding a lot of direct, clear-cut, how-to's online.

Hi Greg

NTM does NOT support NetBIOS in the current version. This however, is into our roadmap and is being tracked. In order for NTM to identify Windows machines in this case 192.168.44.189 and 237. You would need to feed in the WMI credentials for these devices in the Discovery Wizard.

With regards to your questions about Unidentified nodes, let me explain. This Unidentified node was generated during the calculation phase of the NTM process of discovering and mapping. Typically meaning NTM have found some data (IP Address, MAC address or sysName) about this node in the CDP, LLDP or in the routing table. This could be an unmanaged node on your network or a Device provides Bridge table records which indicate several different Connections on the same port and it is not know which is the physical connection, then a Unidentified node is created. If you don't want to see Unidentified nodes, use the filter on the left and uncheck Unidentified nodes.

I clearly understand and appreciate your reply; but I have one request for further explanation. Knowing that NTM does support NetBIOS in the current version why would WMI credentials for the devices need to be added to the scan whereas LANsurveyor Express collects and displays the computer names without modifying pre-scan options? I suspect that LSE is polling the NetBIOS information differently. I am just curious and want to understand. There also may be room for an enhancement/modification to be made with the scanning engine.

Greg, Am sorry, I miss the "Not". NetBIOS is NOT supported in NTM at the moment.
