Simple script to monitor up and down status of a service running on a node

Any one has a simple script in Linux or perl script that I can import into SAM or implement into a SAM script to monitor the up or down status of a service running on a node be it Server, VM, or client machine. Assume SSH setup on that system. All I desire to do is to change out variables to use on a different node.
