Node rediscovery overwriting the Node Caption

I'm encountering an issue with SolarWinds NPM where node captions are being overwritten during rediscovery.

Current Setup: Using SWIS API to create nodes with specific IP addresses and Caption

Problem: When SolarWinds performs node rediscovery, it automatically overwrites the Caption with the device's sysName. Unfortunately, the sysName values for this particular device family are very generic and not useful for identification purposes.

Question: Is there a way to prevent SolarWinds from overwriting manually set caption during the rediscovery process? I'd like to maintain the descriptive caption that were set during initial node creation via the SWIS API.

Any guidance on configuration settings or API parameters that could preserve the original caption would be greatly appreciated.

It's been a while since I had this problem, but I believe that it only happened on the initial creation of the node. From what I remember it was setting the caption to the reverse DNS, but it could also have been the SNMP sysname. Either way, looks like my work around was a short delay after the New-SwisObject (I'm using powershell, but it's the same however you are calling the API), then I called Set-SwisObject. For some reason, I set DisplayName, but I believe that it's just an alias to Caption.

Is that what you are experiencing, or is it changing the caption every day on the rediscovery?

I know you said sysname, but just incase it's actually reverse DNS there is a setting for that:

Settings -> All Settings

Threshold and Polling

Polling Settings

Network

Perform Reverse DNS Lookup (uncheck)

When I create the node, I set both the Caption and SysName to "ABC".
After the first rediscovery, SW changes both to "xyz", which comes from the device’s firmware as a generic SysName.
If I manually reset the Caption back to "ABC", SW does not overwrite it with "xyz" on the next rediscovery.

However, having to manually update values in SW defeats the purpose of automation.
