Failed to configure Database for Log and Event Monitoring due to errors when creating default rules. When upgrade to 2022.4

HI all,

i have an issue to configuration wizard like this after upgrade to 2022.4 from 2020.2.6

Configuring database components for plugins FAILED

Database configuration failed:
• • Failed to configure Database for Log and Event Monitoring due to errors when creating default rules.

• Error while configuring component Orion.ConfigurePluginDatabaseComponents.

Services configuration failed:
• Failed to configure Database for Log and Event Monitoring due to errors when creating default rules.

Maybe some people know issue about it. please help

Because the version (2022.4) is so out t of date I can only advise you open a ticket with Solarwinds as soon as possible.

There was an old article about this which is for 2020.2.* and this usually an error when trying to upgrade an Additional Polling Engine, the previous article recommends to do the below:

Uninstall Orion Log Viewer 20xx.x which you will see via Control Panel > Programs and Features
Run the Configuration Wizard
Restart the Additional Polling Engine
Go to C:\ProgramData\Solarwinds\Installers
Run the installer for Orion Log Viewer 2020, the name of the file is OLM-2020.2.0.xxxxx-LogMgmtBasicInstaller.msi.
Then rerun the Configuration Wizard. It should finish successfully without errors.

If this error is from the Main Polling Engine. Check the following:

1. Verify Database Permissions and Account Privileges:

Ensure the SQL Server account used by SolarWinds has db_owner privileges on the Orion database. Since this is a major upgrade, please refer to article SQL Permissions, best to assign sa, then you can remove the sa privilege after the upgrade and retain the other permissions in the article.
Double-check if the user has permissions to create and modify database schema objects (tables, views, stored procedures).

2. Examine Logs for Specific Errors:

Review detailed logs located at: C:\ProgramData\SolarWinds\Logs\Orion\ConfigurationWizard.log
Search for detailed errors such as table creation errors, constraint violations, or SQL permission errors.

3. Check Database Size and Space Availability:

Confirm your SQL Server instance has sufficient disk space. Lack of space can also trigger this failure.
Ensure that the database is configured to automatically grow with sufficient growth increments.

4. Validate Orion Log Analyzer or Log Viewer Plugin:

Open the SolarWinds Configuration Wizard again.
Select only the Log Analyzer or Log Viewer component to isolate and identify if this specific plugin causes the issue.
If a specific rule or table creation is listed in the log, note the exact SQL error.

5. Manually Repair Orion Database Configuration (Optional):

If Configuration Wizard continues to fail, manually execute the SQL scripts SolarWinds uses:
- SQL scripts typically reside in: C:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Orion\Database Schemas\
- Execute scripts for Log Analyzer components manually via SQL Management Studio.
  IMPORTANT: Back up your database before executing manual scripts.

6. Disable Temporarily Antivirus/Firewall During Installation:

Some security software or antivirus tools can block necessary SQL scripts execution.
Temporarily disabling antivirus during configuration can help rule out interference.
Though this may not be feasible or advised, we can isolate the problem by excluding SolarWinds files and folders, most especially the executable files, and then remove the exclusions after the upgrade. Please discuss with your security team.

7. Re-run SolarWinds Configuration Wizard:

Run Configuration Wizard again with "Run as Administrator".
Re-select plugins and observe if the process completes successfully.

8. Contact SolarWinds Support (If Issue Persists):

If none of the steps resolves the issue, raise a ticket with SolarWinds Support with the log details.

NOTE: SolarWinds Platform 2022.4 is not the latest version. As of now SolarWinds Platform 2025.2 is the latest version that you should consider upgrading to. This version just got release, if you are same with some of our customers who do N-1 for version upgrade, the most stable version you can consider is SolarWinds Platform 2025.1 Service Release 1 (SolarWinds Platform 2025.1.1) and you can download that from the Customer Portal.
