I found out the default ping byte size is 23 based on the icmp data field (which can be changed to more or less). But is that in addition to the standard ping size of 32 bytes? If so it still doesn't equal 78 bytes.
found this online which lines up if accurate - A typical ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol) packet, including both the IP and ICMP headers, can be 78 bytes in size. This size is calculated by adding the IP header (20 bytes), the ICMP header (8 bytes), and the ICMP data payload (32 bytes).
