Greetings All.
A few months ago I inherited a DPA installation (ver. 2024.3). I'm a pretty good Solarwinds admin but have never worked with DPA before.
License renewal time coming up and, since I am now the DPA 'guru' I'm asked how many licenses do we need to cover our SQL AG's?
Taking an example cluster - call it 'AG1':
> Two SQL instances at data center West. Availability Group AG1 set up for Synchronous replication.
> One SQL instance at data center East. Availability Group AG1 set up for Asynchronous replication.
As it sits we have ONLY the Listener at data center West registered for DPA. DPA license management shows using 1 license for AG1.
But... does this really cover us for database monitoring? Or should we...
> register first SQL instance at data center West - 1 license
> register second SQL instance at data center West - 1 license
> resister SQL instance at data center East - 1 license
> continue registration of the listener at data center West - 1 license
So, to get the full benefit of DPA for the SQL Availability Group described above, do I need 1 license, 4 licenses, or other? All the instances run Microsoft SQL Server.
I welcome any input from the community on the best way to register/license DPA for the configuration described above.
P.S. the good news. Company has had DPA installed for a while but never really used it. Now that we have a 'guru' (ha-ha) showing teams/leaders the value of DPA they want to license and install the tool on more SQL clusters in the environment (most configured similar to above).
