Reporting on custom pollers

Hey everyone. This question has neem asked a bunch of times, I'm still not clear on exactly how to do it though. There's a report in SolarWinds called "Physical Entities (Serial Number) v3" that reports on all of the devices we have, but it only shows serial numbers for Cisco devices, and it also doesn't show MAC addresses. I've setup some custom pollers (AlteonMAC, AlteonModelID, AlteonSerialNumber as some examples), but I've got no idea how to either create a new report that shows this information, or better yet add it to the "Physical Entities (Serial Number) v3" report. I'm not a SQL guy at all, which is making the task even more difficult given some of the solutions I've read seem to require a lot of SQL knowledge.

Any thoughts?

Hi there,

within reporting you can select table and go through the editor as they should be able to be picked . Im no DBA either, most of the time its on here somewhere and you can manipulate and add /remove /change as required

Is the report you mention an OOB one as we don't have that? If so, it might be worthwhile sharing that report [in a reply] so that we can see what you are starting with.

That said, the other immediate question I have is you say you have set up custom pollers. Here I presume you mean a node custom poller configured via the 'Manage Pollers' page? As what you are really asking, I think is....

If I have a Vendor X and I want to include its MAC Address (for eg) then how do I do that.

My first response is that the custom poller doesn't pull that information in so you need to create a UnDP instead. Essentially, the UnDP "talks" to a specific OID which contains the information you want. In this example a MAC Address. You then need to create a report that talks to the DB to extract that information. You can see an example of a report we run to extract serial numbers, etc for Thin Access Points here: SWQL report to generate Serial and Model number of WAP devices

The principle here is that each UnDP is created and then assigned to relevant nodes. Then once you've let an appropriate cycle of time to pass the details should now appear in your DB. To confirm this, fire up the DB Manager and do a query on the CustomPollerStatus table. You will see the results under 'Status' column.

Whilst I'd love to talk you through the intricacies of that report then let me say that I feel your pain about SQL / SWQL. However, that report is cobbled together from me asking countless questions and amending other similar reports to get it to work. I have never been a coder and whilst I have learned the basics of SQL/SWQL (there are subtle but frustrating differences), I am still very much a n00b.

Thx for the response. The report was one I downloaded from this site somewhere I think? Not sure if I can just upload the xml file?

Sorry for the confusion. I'm referring to a bunch of Universal Device Pollers I created using the Solarwinds tool for it. It's basically just polling our devices using specific OID's, and spitting out the information. For example, the MAC address, software version, serial number, etc. The devices are Radware load balancers, Checkpoint firewalls. The info is all there and being displayed in the NPM console, just need to figure out how to report on it. lol

Right. In which case see the report I linked for an approach. I'm not saying that's the only one, but that works for us with 5 x UnDPs for reporting on Thin APs.

Ok, thx. Running some queries right now directly on the SQL database just to see what sort of syntax errors I'm getting. From within the Nodes table, I'm running a very dumbed down version of what you posted in the other thread, but am getting;

Hi cdooer1,

I'm not sure why you want to include MAC address to this report. Personally, I would advise not including the MAC address information as it would slow down the report query, increase the complexity of the report and it has the potential of giving you the wrong information.

With that here's a SWQL report that I have that might work for you. It free of joins and it's pretty quick to run. The following should display the MAC address, so long as you include the required 'where clause'

,n.CustomPollerAssignmentOnNode.CurrentValue as [Custom Pooler MAC]

n.CustomPollerAssignmentOnNode.CustomPollerName = 'upsAdvIdentSkuNumber' or n.CustomPollerAssignmentOnNode.CustomPollerName IS NULL)

This "upsAdvIdentSkuNumber" is the name of my custom poller for APC SKU Numbers, you'll want to replace this with the name of the AlteonMAC custom poller.

Here's my full SWQL query:

If you need help finding the name of your custom poller that collects the MAC address, then simply download SWQL studio and then query Orion.NPM.CustomPollerAssignment. Find a serial number for the Alton firewall and then look at the column called CustomPollerName.
