How to MSSQL DB from existing c:/ drive to d:/ drive on the same server

Hello All,

Our DB sits on C:/ drive and it is already full up and we can not generate report again. There is a weekly report we generate on it. So, the SysAdmin team created or added another drive called d:/ drive. Thus we want to move this directory - MSSQL14.SOLARWINDS_ORION inside the Program Files (x86) on the C:/ drive to / drive.

I would need to look into this more as SQL Express is not what I use BUT I would imagine you could back up the existing database and restore it to the new and re-run the SolarWinds Configuration Wizard and point it to the new location. You'll have downtime of your platform but this is just part of what is needed to do the move.

The suggestion from Donrobert15 is good because using SQL Express with SolarWinds has limitations compared to using the full version of SQL.

I personally am a fan of doing Backup/Restore, because there are a lot of paths for a database you need to adjust when you are trying to move mdfs and ldfs.

please do not attempt this if you have zero SQL knowledge. You can mess up your instance by doing things the wrong way.

get a DBA on board, someone with the right knowledge should be able to complete this in an hour

however @donrobert5 is correct, it seems like you are using SQLExpress, this version has a limitation of 10GB for database Size and it looks like you are over the limit.

so moving the database will not be the solution.

you need to purchase a full SQL version and move the Database there.

Hi MJ2164,
Looks like you are using SQL Express (which is having a 20GB limitation), and you already reached the max size allowed.
Moving sqlexpress to other larger disk drive will not help, as you are bound by the 20GB limitation.

you must lower the SQL DB size to below 20GB, like:

1) delete some un-wanted nodes

2) lower the detail monitoring retention data from default (7-days) to 3-days

3) once you do above, remember to run the Database maintenance process manually (or change the ARCHIVE Time to 10mins from now

4) Generate reports again.
