I have had Solar Winds for a while and done very little. I would like to start getting more out of it, but the knowlege base and the CBT learning is pretty vast and some of the training takes a while for me to figure out that is now what I am looking for. I am hoping someone can tell me what to research (terms, technologies) to learn what will be most helpful.
Right now I have one situation and one possible solutions about which I have a few questions. I can take follow up questions to a new post if that is appropriate, for now, i am just looking for a little direction.
My issue is that I think I have bottlenecks. With the tools I have and know how to use, I am not getting a clear picture of what is going on, unless I happen to hear about it while it is happening. I have found a report that may be helpful, that lists the peak bandwidth over a time period. I am thinking this is more helpful that a perf monitor of bandwidth, since the perf monitor is roughly 5 minute averages so I may be maxing out for 2/3 of the time and not know it. The report looks good, but is a lot to go over as I cannot seem to figure out how to specify the ports. Or better yet to be able to create a alarm that will email me when peak usage goes over a threshold.
Once I find an interface that seems to be maxing out, I am thinking I would need to do a net flow collection. My question is, won't that make matters worse if the netflow traffic has to go through that same interface to get to the SW database? Basically doubling the traffic, right? Is there a better way?
I am not asking for someone to hand hold me through this, but point me in the right direction, either telling me what tool would work or links to training or what not. I can search, just not sure what I am searching for.
