Solarwinds - Percent Memory Used Does Not match linux System Memory Used

Hello Everyone,

I'm new to Solarwinds.

In our environment we have multiple servers (RedHat/Linux) that we monitor through Solarwinds.

2 of our servers' alert with the following: "Node status is Critical, Memory Usage threshold is Critical."

When I log into the server that is causing the alerts, I use the "top", "free -g" commands and nothing is showing a high memory utilization.

How to troubleshoot and/or determine why the alerts and no high memory users?

Go to Node Details Page and then click on Left side of the screen and click Vital Stats.

Under Disk Volumes you will find all Volumes along with Physical memory, Shared memory, Cached memory etc. By default Cached Memory will be consuming 100% due to which it will show node status as critical. try excluding that from List resources tab.

I do see how "Cached memory" and "Shared memory" are at 100%.

I'm going to get with other team members to discuss the exclusion of the 2 and why our apps/server is consuming so much of the cached and shared memory.

I've got a follow up question. I'm a bit confused with what solarwinds means by cache memory and shared memory on Linux systems.

I've logged on to the serves that are exhibiting the critical memory alert and looked at free -h, vmstat and looked at the sysctl -a | grep dirty paramters.

Based on the configuration, I don't see how 100% shared and cached memory reached 100%.

Are the alerts based on something other than buffer/cache on Linux?

just an Idea, if you do not care about cached and shared memory monitoring, you can uncheck those in the list resources feature.

I am nowhere near a Linux expert, however I think this is the SWAP partition and some things that Linux mostly always reports as 100% utilization
