Where do I find various error logs on polling engine?

Hello -

We are running Solarwinds Orion (not HCO) and are trying to troubleshoot adding nodes via WMI.

I know the logs for this are somewhere in C:\ProgramData\Solarwinds\ then I think I go to Logs?

We have some nodes that are being a problem and are looking to see some of the errors. I know Solarwinds writes them to a log but it has been awhile since I have had to dig through those logs.

Additionally where would the agent failure logs be as well. Or if someone has a master list of where to find various error logs in C:\ProgramData\Solarwinds\ that would be great.

I'd love to see a master list of where 'which' log file type is.

I don't have your answer but I, like you start with c:\porgramdata\solarwinds\logs >> then sub-dive according to need.

That, or I open a ticket with support and ask them. Maybe that's a thing... open a ticket and ask them to provide a master list of log file locations.

Could try checking the discovery logs here C:\ProgramData\SolarWinds\Discovery Engine regarding errors when adding nodes. Or if you have access to the polled nodes via and agent, you could check C:\ProgramData\SolarWinds\Logs_Agent

Thanks! When I am doing active troubleshooting I remember where they are. When things are working well and I do not have to dig the poof out of my head.

If you know what you're looking for you can go toC:\ProgramData\SolarWinds\Collector\Logs\Plugins there you'll see various logs of each part of the collector services, look for things with WMI in it.

I'd love to see a master list with some context, always wish there wa something easier to CTRL+F through

You can see the list of logs pretty much from logs adjuster, and when you create diagnostics they're all in that file. The folks who've done support tell me the best route is diagnostics -> drop the file in VSCode, have a search in there

For WMI it's probably easiest to troubleshoot with a combination of in-UI and in-PS tbh, it's Ping -> TCP check (test-netconnection) 135 -> get-wmiobject if comfortable with it / Creds -> windows firewall -> network firewall
